Easy Steps In Cleaning Your Bird Feeders Properly

There are certain reasons why you need to clean your bird feeders properly. First off, cleaning them properly can help you a lot in keeping your surroundings clean. Second, having clean feeders will allow you to attract more birds. And third, you can eliminate the presence of bacteria and other forms of disease-causing germs from the feeders. Through this, you can assure that the birds that will be eating on those feeders will have less chances of getting sick.

What are the steps in cleaning bird feeders correctly? What are the materials needed for cleaning them? For experts, these questions may not be a problem. But, how about those individuals who do not know the answers to those questions yet? No need to worry though, for the next part of this article will tackle the answers to those questions.

For the materials to be used, you need to have 2 pails or water containers, bleach, hot water, plain or tap water, a pair of gloves, and a brush. The reason why you need to use a pair of gloves is to protect yourself from acquiring any sort of contamination from cleaning the feeders. Since you cannot assure that every single bird you attract is free from any contagious disease, it would be best to have your self protected. And this can be done by using a pair of gloves. As they say, it’s better safe than sorry. On the other hand, the purpose of having some hot water is for sanitizing the feeders after having them rinsed. For the brush, you can use one that can be bought from pet shops for they were specially made for a specific purpose which is to clean feeders. But if in case you do not have one, then you can settle on using a toothbrush or one that is for cleaning regular bottles.

For the steps in cleaning your bird feeders, you first need to put some water on a pail or bucket. Then, soak the feeder in the container or pail. Put some bleach on the water and have the feeders soaked for 5 minutes. After soaking the feeders, remove them one by one and clean every part of the feeder with the use of a brush. Cleaning every part means cleaning the inside as well as the outside parts of the feeder. Also clean the poles, platforms, lids, and perches. After cleaning them thoroughly, rinse them thoroughly for at least 15 seconds with the use of clean water. This will ensure you that every chemical residue will be removed from the feeder. After that, soak the feeders again in hot water for at least 10 minutes. This will help sanitize the feeders and kill remaining bacteria. And lastly, have those feeders completely dried to avoid the presence of moisture which may lead to molds and mildew. Once they are totally dry, you can already refill them and place them on their proper locations.

Regular cleaning of bird feeders should rightfully be observed as it can provide you with lots of advantages. As much as possible, perform the cleaning once every month. For sure, attracting many different kinds of birds will be as easy as it can be with the help of clean and attractive feeders.
